O Books
Over 800 entries, ranging alphabetically from absent healing to zone therapy, make this the definitive guide to the New Age, spirituality, religion, God, the planet, the universe –whatever is out there, in short. Or perhaps not out there.
But it comes with several health warnings attached. It will make you laugh at what other people believe. Worse, it will make you laugh at what you believe. But then if you can’t laugh at what you believe you probably don’t understand what you believe – and wisdom is seldom distinguishable from folly to those who have not yet understood it
What a HOOT! I have been laughing my head off. How deliciously sly Peter
Lemesurier’s definitions are, presenting the party line and then following
the logic of the statement through to its point of absurdity. A splendid antidote
to taking oneself too seriously!
Virginia Lloyd-Davies, former publicity director of the Findhorn Foundation
A highly entertaining romp through New Age terminology that should have
a permanent home in your bathroom.
Scientific and Medical Network Review
I don't think I've ever encountered a useful text book that was so entertaining
before -- basically funny as well as informative!
David Hill, Emeritus Professor, Calgary University
In this book, subtitled "An A-Z of everything you wanted to know from
absent healing, through God to Zone Therapy", Peter brings his calm wisdom
and tongue in cheek, witty turn of phrase to just about every 'New Age' idea
that has emerged to date. The resulting listing is incredibly funny at times,
but also thought-provoking and, to my mind, even conducive to actual soul
searching. I have thoroughly enjoyed dipping into this book and chuckle as
I recommend it. It would make an excellent gift.

The Gods Within
An interactive guide to archetypal therapy

Psychologists have long realized that the ancient Greeks had deep
insights into the human psyche which, whether they realized it or not,
they expressed through their mythology.
Peter Lemesurier's new book
offers a way of using these insights directly as a startling new
method of self-healing and self-realization. In the full tradition of
Joseph Campbell, James Hillman and Karl Kerenyi, it applies the
dynamics of the Greek myths to quite overwhelming effect - as many who
have used the approach report. Basically, the system is homeopathic,
in that it encourages co-operation with each currently controlling god
in turn (once identified via a simple diagnostic test) thus allowing
that god to "move on". By the same token, therefore, it gives readers
full permission - perhaps for the first time in their lives - to be
who they really are, removing all the stultifying effects of chronic
guilt about themselves. But first, discover your god....
- Brings each ancient major god to life in vivid, uncensored
form
- Offers a whole range of full-blooded therapies, based firmly
on Greek myth
- Is quite unlike other alleged 'Greek god' therapies that are
essentially modern and will-based, rather than true to ancient Greek
tradition
- Guaranteed to apply a salutary healing shock to the system
- Comes complete with easy-to-use diagnostic test
Whether you enjoy analyzing your family and friends or looking for ways
to explain or excuse your own strengths and weaknesses, this book provides
a whole new slant. It can be read just for fun, but there is an uncanny ring
of truth to it. Peter Lemesurier combines scholarship with wry humor, a compulsive
mixture.
Anna Corser, Physiotherapy Manager and Stress Counsellor
This wonderful book has helped me a lot, not to mention others close to
me. Artemis is utterly important to me. Only now can I see that she is the
essential me that I have denied since puberty. Most powerful and healing.
Brita Brandt, prominent Finnish opera singer
The Greek gods approach does provide a valuable framework and metaphor
for talking about the journey we are all on, beset by inner problems and
conflicts, and the book is a useful aid to self therapy (and ultimately Self-knowledge).

My Miniblog
for this week...
People have always tended to expect the End of the World at any moment
of crisis. In Nostradamus's day, this revolved around the Plague, widespread
famine resulting from Europe's growing 'Little Ice Age', the Wars of Religion,
and huge numbers of resulting deaths: Plague, Famine, War and Death, in other
words -- the traditional Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. To contemporary
Catholics, when John Calvin's accession in Geneva was added to the mix, even
the promised Antichrist was in evidence. Thus, it went without saying that
the End of the World was Nigh -- which was presumably why Nostradamus didn't
bother to say it.
Expectation at the time was that the world would end either in 1800 (or
possibly 1879) or in 2242, and Nostradamus evidently shared that view. When
he wrote that his prophecies were 'perpetual prophecies for from now [1555]
until the year 3797', what he was trying to say in his vonfused way was that
they would continue to apply cyclically until 'the year corresponding to
the difference between 1555 and 3797' came along -- which is of course...
2242!
Modern convictions about the End of the World being Nigh are, of course,
equally the result of times of panic -- and equally ill-founded. For each
generation, the End of the World has always been Nigh, which is presumably
why Jesus reportedly said that it would happen in his own generation, why
Paul claimed that not all his contemporaries would 'sleep', and why, in St
John's Revelation, Jesus is quoted as promising to come 'soon'.
